Introduction
What happens when a doctor refuses to accept “just eat less and move more” as the answer to midlife weight gain? In this insightful and compassionate conversation, Dr. Angela Kwong, GP, entrepreneur, and founder of Enlighten Me Weight Management Program, sits down to unpack the science, psychology, and self-awareness behind metabolism, modern medicine, and living well as we age.
GLP-1 medications like Ozempic have made global headlines for their role in weight management, but as Dr. Kwong explains, they are part of a much bigger story about how our bodies, and our mindsets, evolve in midlife. From insulin resistance and “food noise” to the emotional roots of our eating habits, this episode explores the deep connections between biology, behaviour, and belief.
Midlife often brings unwelcome surprises: slower metabolism, creeping weight gain, and the frustration that “what worked before” suddenly doesn’t. Dr. Kwong helps us understand why—and shows how to think beyond quick fixes toward sustainable, holistic health. Her approach blends medical science with emotional intelligence, offering listeners new tools to take charge of their wellbeing.
In this episode, we explore:
What GLP-1 medications are and how they work
Why our metabolism slows with age—and what we can do about it
The concept of the body weight set point and why diets often fail
How “food noise” hijacks our attention, and what life feels like when it’s gone
The emotional roots of our relationship with food
The overlap between food cravings, addiction, and mood
Why perimenopausal women are often misdiagnosed or misunderstood
The science and self-awareness behind sustainable weight management
How Angela’s journey from rural GP to online entrepreneur reflects courage, purpose, and reinvention
Dr. Kwong also shares her vision for a “midlife MOT”, an annual health check that includes waist circumference, fasting insulin, and mental health screening. Her practical wisdom reframes aging as an opportunity to optimize our “health span,” not just our lifespan.
Key insights:
“Food is energy, but for most of us, it’s also celebration, comfort, and coping. Medication can quiet the noise, but it can’t fix the relationship.”
“If what worked in your thirties doesn’t work in your fifties, it’s not your fault—it’s your biology changing.”
“We need to stop seeing aging as decline. It’s a chance to live our best life for longer.”
By the end of this conversation, you’ll see why Dr. Kwong has been described as “the smartest doctor I’ve ever met.” Her mix of scientific clarity, entrepreneurial drive, and human empathy makes this episode essential listening for anyone navigating midlife health and purpose.
